Candidates should have a Ph.D. in GIS, Geography or related fields at time of appointment. Areas of specialization may include, but are not limited to: spatial data mining, geospatial big data analytics, mobile mapping, cloud computing, geospatial cyber-infrastructure, social media, or related areas. The successful candidate is expected to show a strong potential for establishing a sustained, externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate level GIS courses, and supervise M.S. and Ph.D. students.
|About the University||
Florida Atlantic University is located between the Greater Everglades and world-famous beaches in south Florida, serving the nation’s 8th most populated metropolitan area. The region’s geographic location in close proximity to coastal urban environments and sensitive ecosystems, combined with its enormous and rapidly growing population, poses great teaching and research opportunities associated with human environmental interactions in the Everglades and the urban and coastal marine continuum of south Florida. The region has also pioneered in the adoption and development of Geospatial technology. There are three signature themes in Geosciences Department, including Earth Systems Science, human-environmental systems and geo-information sciences. Faculty in the Department of Geosciences and throughout the College of Science are engaged in collaborative research projects with federal, state, and local agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, the South Florida Water Management District, and multiple local government and resource management agencies. The successful candidate is expected to play a key role in the Center for GIS hosted in the Department, and participate in our close partnerships with FAU’s Florida Center for Environmental Studies and Environmental Science Program. The candidate will also have opportunities to contribute significantly to FAU’s university-wide pillars and platforms of excellence defined by FAU’s new Strategic Plan, such as Ocean Science and Engineering / Environmental Sciences, Sensing and Smart Systems, and Big Data Analytics.

|Responsibilities||The City of Lawrence is currently seeking to fill the position of GIS Analyst. The position reports to the GIS Coordinator. The position will focus on supporting GIS needs for several departments including but not limited to Information Technology, Public Works, Fire/Medical and Parks and Recreation. The position supports a wide spectrum of GIS data related to city infrastructure (street pavement, storm sewer, park irrigation, fiber optic, etc...), subdivisions, easements, LiDAR/topography/contours, base map data, aerial photography and more. Responsibilities include maintaining and updating geospatial databases, responding to internal map and data requests, maintaining informational maps and map books, assisting the GIS Coordinator with long and short term GIS projects, converting geodatabases, performing geographic analysis, developing, documenting and automating workflows; designing and maintaining field collection applications through the Esri ArcGIS Online platform.|
|Qualifications||The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, professional and personable individual with an attention to detail.
2 years’ experience with GIS with formal education or training in a GIS, engineering or drafting course. A bachelor’s degree is preferred with major course work in GIS, geography, computer science, physical science or other related field. Prior experience with Esri ArcGIS Desktop software/extensions, ModelBuilder, COGO editing, geometric network editing, relational database software (such as MS Access or MS SQL Server), and grasp of basic programming concepts is preferred.
